Manga Tour Itinerary

9 – 10 March: UK-Tokyo
Depart from London Heathrow in the evening of 9 March 2017 for your overnight flight to Tokyo. (Non-UK passengers will have to make their own flight arrangements). Upon arrival the next day, you will be transferred to your hotel in Tokyo by private coach.

11 March: Ghibli Museum, Nakano Broadway
After breakfast, we will visit the superb Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, designed by one of the world’s top animators, Hayao Miyazaki – Academy Award winner for “Spirited Away”. Then we go on to Nakano Broadway – the mega-mall home to Mandarake and countless other manga and deranged speciality stores.

12 March: Shinjuku, Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park
Today we start with an orientation of Shinjuku visiting local hotspots and stopping off at a Manga Café. We then go on to beautiful Meiji Shrine and wacky Harajuku nearby. Soak up the atmosphere of Yoyogi Park where young Japanese get dressed up in their finest gear as…..1950s rockers, punks and Cosplay dolls! Enjoy the bands in the park as we then move on to the Oriental Bazaar – a great place for souvenir shopping.

13 March: Tokyo Tower, Asakusa, River Cruise
Today we visit the iconic Tokyo Tower – Godzilla’s favourite haunt – where you will gain access to the Main Observatory. We then go on to bustling Sensoji Temple in Asakusa – beloved by all Tokyoites. We then enjoy a pleasure cruise from Asakusa pier along the Sumida River to Hama-Rikyu – site of one of Tokyo’s loveliest gardens.

14 March: Free Day/Optional Tour
Today is yours to enjoy at leisure, or, you may want to join one of our Optional trips. The first is a day out to the magical world of Tokyo Disneyland (see Option A below). Alternatively, how about a fully-guided tour to Mt. Fuji and the beautiful nearby resort of Hakone (see Option B below), returning to Tokyo by Bullet Train? If you decide to simply stay in Tokyo, you might want visit the futuristic district of Odaiba, where you can spend time gaming at Sega Joypolis – an indoor gaming theme park, then go on to see the famous life-sized Gundam. Nearby is Toyota Megaweb – a gigantic car showroom featuring cars of the past as well as the future.

15 March: Akihabara
Today we visit the otaku mecca of Akihabara, home to dozens of anime, manga and electronic goods stores.

16 March: Return to the UK
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Narita Airport (Tokyo New International Airport) by private coach from where you will depart for the UK. You will arrive in the UK on the same day. Alternatively, you may wish to join one of our extension packages.

Optional Tour A: Tokyo Disneyland

Enjoy the dreams and magic of the seven different themed lands in Tokyo Disneyland for one day! By day, experience the fantastic rides and attractions. By night, enjoy the superb Electric Parade.

Please let us know by the balance due date if you would like to join this optional tour.

KYOTO EXTENSION (6 NIGHTS)

Add an extra week in Kyoto and Miyajima.

After the Manga tour speed off on the magnificent Bullet Train to Japan’s cultural heartland. Kyoto is where you will find the Japan of silent temples nestling in bamboo groves, gardens of finely raked sand and bewitching geisha. This city is home to over 2,000 temples and shrines, exquisite crafts and some of the best cuisine in the country. In short, Kyoto is the heartbeat of traditional Japan. From Kyoto you have the opportunity to take excursions to the nearby Nara and lively Osaka. You will also visit Hiroshima, an attractive, cosmopolitan city which has risen from the ashes of the world’s first atomic bomb attack and stay the night in a traditional Japanese ryokan (Inn) on the nearby beautiful island of Miyajima.

We will provide you with all the information you need to travel around Japan independently.

Daily Itinerary

16 March: Tokyo-Kyoto

Check out of your Tokyo hotel with the rest of the Manga Group.

Spend a leisurely morning in Tokyo before boarding Japan’s world famous Bullet Train and speed to Kyoto, the traditional and cultural heart of Japan.

Check into your superbly located, spotless 3* hotel (3 nights).

We will provide you with a 7 Day Japan Rail Pass for travel over the next few days. This gives you unlimited access to the entire Japan Rail (JR) network, including Bullet Train (Shinkansen) services.

17 March: Kyoto sightseeing
Join a seated coach tour for sightseeing in Kyoto. The tour is guided, lunch is included, and sights include Nijo Castle, the beautiful Golden Pavilion and Kiyomizu-dera, a lovely mountainside temple boasting stunning views over the city.

18 March: Nara sightseeing
Self-guided excursion to the nearby city of Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital and home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the afternoon we recommend visiting the Kyoto International Manga Museum.

19 March: Kyoto-Miyajima
Check out of your hotel and board the Bullet Train bound for Hiroshima. Continue by local train and ferry to the lovely island of Miyajima. Check into your ryokan for 1 night. A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn where you’ll sleep on a futon on a tatami mat floor. A delicious Japanese dinner (included) will be served to you.

Enjoy the sights of this peaceful island. You can walk round the island in the evening wearing your cotton yukata (a robe provided in your room).

20 March: Miyajima & Hiroshima sightseeing, return to Kyoto
After breakfast at your ryokan, head back to the mainland and visit Hiroshima’s moving Peace Memorial Park, Museum and Atomic Bomb Dome.

Later this afternoon board the Bullet Train back to Kyoto.

Check into your hotel for 2 nights.

21 March: Osaka/Kyoto
Today is yours at leisure. You may wish to take a day trip to Osaka, Japan’s lively second city or do some further sightseeing in Kyoto.

22 March: Depart Japan
Sadly it’s time to say goodbye to Japan… until next time! Transfer to Kansai International Airport (Osaka) from where you depart. You will arrive back in the UK on the same day.

A traditional Japanese ryokan perched on a hill giving it arguably the best views of any property over Itsukushima shrine and the famous tori gate.

Rooms are large traditional tatami mat rooms with en suite bath and toilet. A small TV, safe and refrigerator are available in the room.

Jukeiso has communal male and female Japanese style baths and also a private bath with fantastic views over the island that can be reserved making it perfect for families or couples.

A delicious, freshly prepared multi course dinner will be served to you in the dining room where you will also take breakfast and have a choice of Japanese or Western.

Stay on in Japan after the Manga Tour!

KANZAWA EXTENSION (6 NIGHTS)

Add an extra week to Kanazawa and the Japan Alps.

Kanazawa was originally built around Kanazawa castle and the beautiful garden Kenrokuen, and contains well-preserved samurai and geisha teahouses. The new Bullet Train started running from Tokyo to Kanazawa only recently, making it easier than ever to visit this beautiful city! From Kanazawa you will then visit the charming castle town of Takayama, before stopping for one night in Matsumoto, famous for its “Crow Castle”.

16 March: Tokyo to Kanazawa
Depart Tokyo on the wonderful Bullet train and make your way to Kanazawa, located on the Sea of Japan coast. After arriving early afternoon, you can start enjoying the sights of this wonderful city, from the well-preserved Nagamachi samurai district to Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s top three gardens. Check in to your 3* hotel for 2 nights.

17 March: Kanazawa
Spend further time exploring Kanazawa which is home to some of Japan’s finest pottery and lacquerware. Why not visit the 21st Century Museum and experience Leandro Erlich’s famous “Swimming Pool” (a pool where people appear to be underwater), bustling Omicho Market or Kanazawa Castle.

18 March: Kanazawa to Takayama
Leave Kanazawa and transfer by local train to Takayama, a lovely town in the Japanese Alps. Takayama’s atmospheric streets, museums and folkcrafts make it a great place to discover rural Japan. It is also a superb base for exploring the surrounding Hida district and National Park. For 2 nights you will stay in a lovely minshuku (family inn) with Japanese style rooms. A delicious dinner is included both nights.

19 March: Takayama, Shirakawa-go
Further sightseeing in Takayama might include Hida no Sato, an open-air museum of traditional architecture and crafts. If you would like to do a day trip, we recommend an excursion to Shirakawa-go, a charming village famous for its UNESCO World Heritage ‘gassho-zukuri’ (thatched roofs). The trip is only 50 minutes one-way from Takayama by bus.

20 March: Matsumoto
Travel by coach to Matsumoto, where you will arrive around lunchtime. Spend the afternoon at Matsumoto Castle, one of the most impressive castles in Japan, and enjoy strolling around the pretty, laidback streets of this mountain town. You will stay one night in a 3* hotel.

21 March: Tokyo
After breakfast take the train back to Tokyo. Return to the same hotel in Tokyo for your final night in Japan. You may want to use this day for any last minute souvenir shopping.

22 March: Depart Japan
Transfer from your hotel to Narita International Airport (Tokyo).
Return to the UK (arrive same day).

Minshuku Sosuke is a traditional Japanese guest house in Hida Takayama, situated only 8-minutes’ walk from Takayama station. From your hotel you can easily walk around historic sights, such as the morning market and temples.

All rooms have a TV, futon (Japanese bed) and air-conditioning. The hotel uses locally produced vegetables and meat which will be incorporated in your meals.
