An exquisite tour of Japan in the autumn which coincides with Japan’s spectacular maple leaf season. See Japan burst into colour with a visit to historic Kyoto, with its fabulous temples and shrines and a wealth of beautiful gardens. Take a day trip to the delightful Nara where you can stroll around the park and feed the deer. Spend a night on the idyllic island of Miyajima whose maple trees are especially renowned throughout Japan. See the stunning gardens at the Adachi Museum and Korakuen which is considered to be one of Japan’s top three gardens. The tour ends in the vibrant city of Tokyo where you can experience modern Japan and at the same time enjoy the beautiful autumn colours at the many gardens in the city.
9-10 November: UK-Osaka
Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Kansai International Airport (Osaka). From there you will transferred by private coach to your comfortable 4* Kyoto hotel in a superb central location for 4 nights.
11 November: Kyoto
Enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Kyoto by Private coach. Some of the wonderful temples and beautiful gardens you will visit in today’s tour include Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and the serene temple complex, Daitoku-ji with 15 sub-temples and associated gardens. After lunch at the Kyoto Handicraft Centre we go on to visit Kiyomizu-dera, a lovely hillside temple offering breathtaking views over the city. Tonight enjoy a Welcome Dinner.
12 November: Kyoto
After breakfast, we will be using public transport to visit Tofukuji Temple, famous for its valley of stunning maple leaves. In the afternoon we tour the imposing Nijo Castle and its gardens.
13 November: Nara
Today we take a short train trip to the nearby town of Nara and visit the spectacular Todaiji Temple – the largest wooden building in the world which contains the Great Buddha. Take a stroll in Nara Park and feed the deer. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure.
14 November: Hiroshima
After checking out we board Japan’s world-famous Bullet Train to Hiroshima. The Atomic Bomb Dome and the moving Peace Memorial Park and Museum are sights not to be missed. We check in to our 4* deluxe hotel in Hiroshima tonight for one night.
15 November: Miyajima-Okayama (Fire Festival on Miyajima)
Today we make the short trip by ferry to the lovely nearby island of Miyajima. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and fantastic views of the o-torii (the red floating shrine gate) of Itsukushima Shrine, one of Japan’s most beautiful views. This afternoon you will be lucky enough to attend the thrilling walking-over-fire ceremony (Hiwatari Shiki) at Daisho-in Temple. Later today we then head on to Okayama and check in to our 4* hotel for 2 nights.
16 November: Yonago Day Trip
Today we will make a day trip to the Adachi Museum famous for its spectacular 6 gardens (and its collection of contemporary Japanese art).
17 November: Okayama-Tokyo
In the morning we visit Korakuen, one of Japan’s three most celebrated gardens. Korakuen is at its most spectacular during the autumn season. After lunch we take the Bullet train to bustling Tokyo where you will stay for 3 nights in a 3½* hotel in central Tokyo .
18 November: Tokyo
We start the day by visiting the wonderful Koishikawa Korakuen and then move on to the bustling district of Shinjuku and the gardens at Shinjuku Gyoen (which include a Japanese garden and a French-style garden).
19 November: Tokyo at leisure/Optional tour
Your last full day in Tokyo is yours to enjoy at leisure. As it is a Sunday we recommend visiting Meiji Shrine, one of the most beautiful shrines in Japan, and the nearby lively district of Harajuku. In the afternoon we suggest a visit to the wonderful Hamarikyu garden. Enjoy a farewell dinner in the evening.
Alternatively you can join one of the following superb optional tours:
Nikko: Join a fantastic guided excursion to Nikko, a beautiful temple town in the mountains north of Tokyo. You will visit Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogun, and home to 5 National Treasures of Japan. You will also get the chance to see the famous carving of the three wise monkeys. Then drive through the picturesque countryside to visit Tamozawa Imperial Villa and Kirifuri falls before heading back to Tokyo.
Mt Fuji: Join a wonderful guided excursion to the beautiful Hakone & Mt Fuji region. Ride in a cable car for a superb view of the surrounding mountains and volcanic craters, and even board a pirate ship to cruise around Lake Ashi! A delicious lunch is included. Return to Tokyo on Japan’s world-famous Bullet Train.
20 November: Depart Japan
Transfer to Narita Airport (Tokyo) for your flight back to the UK.
Located on Kawaramachi Street, one of Kyoto’s main restaurant and shopping streets and a stone’s throw from the covered markets.
The modern and brightly furnished rooms include complimentary wi-fi and LCD TVs with BBC as well as refrigerator and tea making facilities.
A breakfast buffet serving both Western and Japanese dishes available in the hotel restaurant.
Other facilities include an English bar and Spa facilities to help you relax and unwind.
Conveniently located near Okayama station. All rooms have TV, refrigerator and tea making facilities. Free wifi is available throughout the hotel.
The hotel provides a buffet breakfast with both Japanese and Western options including local specialities made with local ingredients.
The hotel has a large public bath, perfect to relax in at the end of the day.
A traditional Japanese ryokan perched on a hill giving it arguably the best views of any property over Itsukushima shrine and the famous tori gate. Rooms are large traditional tatami mat rooms with en suite bath and toilet. A small TV, safe and refrigerator are available in the room. Jukeiso has communal male and female Japanese style baths and also a private bath with fantastic views over the island that can be reserved making it perfect for families or couples. A delicious, elaborate dinner will be served to you in the dining room where you will also take breakfast (which is a choice of Japanese or Western). Free wifi is available in the lobby.
Rooms are compact and come equipped with refrigerator, TV and free wifi. Although the rooms have no bath they have rain shower heads and body jets and are stocked with Shiseido products.
A buffet breakfast is served in the second floor Italian restaurant.
