Yes, if you are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of “temporary visitor.” “Temporary Visitor” entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for “sight-seeing, etc.” If you apply for a “stay for sight-seeing” when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as “Temporary Visitor,” as shown below. Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Yes, if you are a Japanese national living in a foreign country, who is: a) qualified to live permanently in that country, or, b) who is married to a non-Japanese residing in a country other than Japan. Note: Persons meeting conditions a or b above will be required to show proof at the point of purchase of an Exchange Order and obtaining a JAPAN RAIL PASS. Persons meeting condition b must provide written proof of the following: 1. That they are married to a non-Japanese 2. That their spouse is living outside Japan Even if an applicant presents electronic data or other documentation, establishing their compliance with conditions a and b above, the pass may be denied if the clerk is unable to verify that compliance.

- Can I buy the Japan Rail Pass when I am in Japan?
No. You must purchase your Japan Rail Pass before you arrive in Japan. You must start using your Japan Rail Pass within 3 months from the date of issue.
- Do you send me the Japan Rail Pass?
We will send you the Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order. When you arrive in Japan you will exchange this for the actual Japan Rail Pass.

Yes you can do this at any Japan Rail Station. We strongly recommend that you write down all the details of your desired train times as the staff at JR ticket offices can read English but they often cannot speak it. We can give you further guidance on the sort of information you should provide at the time of booking.
- What is the difference between Green and Ordinary class Japan Rail Passes?
The Green Class Japan Rail Pass will enable you to sit is the Green Car which is a First Class carriage. Green Carriages will give you a little more legroom and slightly wider seats.
- What are the restrictions on using a Japan Rail Pass?
You can use the Japan Rail Pass on the entire Japan Rail Network which includes the Bullet train (excluding Nozomi and Mizuho class – which are slightly faster trains) and Narita Express and also the JR ferry to Miyajima Island. You cannot use the Japan Rail Pass on private train lines, overnight trains and subway trains.
